Atlanta painter Lydia Walls is the very model of artistic discipline. Between January and June 2013, she painted these 100 portraits of famous and infamous Southerners.

In her portraits, you will find some surprises, and you will find some of the usual suspects. But Walls’ work makes one thing crystal-clear: If you want to take some interesting looks at the duality of the Southern thing, the answer is to paint 100 portraits of famous Southerners.
