The Bitter Southerner has a single aim: to uncover the American South in all its truth and complexity — and in the process to break stereotypes about the region and its people by pushing out important, difficult, uncomfortable, irreverent, witty, and addictive stories online. It’s work intended to keep the region honest, inspired, and moving forward. Our publishing arm, BS Publishing, works to do the same through new books and our full-format, print magazine.
In 2017, we created the Better South Initiative, a fund dedicated to supporting organizations working on the front lines of our communities toward a better South. When you shop in our General Store, 1% of every dollar you spend on our merchandise funds this initiative. Over the years, we have distributed more than $100,000 in funds to incredible organizations making a difference throughout the South.
